New Research Suggests Terpenes And CBD Work 2X’s Better For Covid-19 Inflammation Than Corticosteroid

In the fight against Covid-19, cytokine storms are one of the most deadly factors that doctors are battling. This symptom in severe cases of the novel coronavirus can lead to excessive inflammation, swelling, pain, and loss of organ function. It can even cause the immune system to ramp up so much that it starts killing the body’s own cells – instead of just fighting the infection. In serious cases, this can lead to death, as we’ve seen in many cases of severe Covid-19.

In the last few months,  researchers have been looking at whether cannabis, or it’s many chemical compounds, might help to fight this deadly effect by bringing down inflammation. Recently, we’ve seen positive results from studies suggesting that CBD, a compound in cannabis, may help fight these cytokine storms.

Now early results from an ongoing Israeli study are adding to the chorus of researchers suggesting that cannabis’ ingredients could be a game changing treatment in the fight against Covid-19. But this study says that terpenes, compounds that provide the aroma and flavor in cannabis and many other plants, may lead to even better results than CBD alone, and might outperform conventional treatments like corticosteroids. Reports from the study show that a combination of CBD with terpenes was 3 times more effective at inhibiting cytokine activity than dexamethasone, a corticosteroid which a recent study found to be an effective treatment for Covid-19 cytokine storms.

Study: CBD and Terpene Formulation Effective Against COVID-19 Symptoms

A study led by Israeli research and development firms Eybna and CannaSoul Analytics suggests that a combination of CBD with terpenes is three times more effective at preventing cytokine activity than corticosteroid dexamethasone, Forbes reports. So-called cytokine storms are one of the symptoms of COVID-19, causing inflammation, swelling, pain, loss of organ function, and can cause the immune system to kill the body’s own cells.

The study investigates Eybna’s NT-VRL – a proprietary terpene formulation which aims to treat inflammatory conditions such as the cytokine storm syndrome experienced by some COVID-19 patients. The product contains 30 individual terpenes that may be anti-inflammatory agents and are generally considered safe for consumption, the report says. Dexamethasone was found in a recent United Kingdom study to reduce mortality by one-third in COVID-19 patients on ventilators.

Researchers used a “Cytokine Storm Assay” from Cannasoul, whose founder Dr. David Meiri indicated is well-established and allows for evaluation of cytokine storm syndrome. Using human blood cells, the assay helps researchers assess the effect of different treatments on cytokine secretion, which drives the storm in severe COVID-19 patients.

CBD alone inhibited around an average of 75 percent of the cytokines, while the terpenes alone inhibited around 80 percent, while NT-VRL inhibited around 90 percent. Dexamethasone inhibited around 30 percent, the report says.

Traumatic Brain Injuries

Traumatic brain injury affects a high number of young adults and their hospitalization is still a significant public challenge. During neuronal damage a complex series of mechanisms becomes activated. Energy failure leads to calcium overload, depolarization of neurons and release of neurotransmitters with consecutive excitotoxicity, induced through overstimulation from excitatory receptors like NMDA receptor.

Injured neuronal tissue releases pro-inflammatory cytokines leading to migration of inflammatory cells to the damaged site and inflammation.  Cannabinoids (CBD) positively affect cellular and molecular processes during ischemic or traumatic brain injury and were shown to be protective mostly via microglial cells.

The number of damaged neurons was significantly reduced after treatment with endocannabinoids, like N-arachidonoyl dopamine, (2-AG) or PEA associated with altered microglial cell number.  2-AG was shown to induce protection after neuronal lesion and to reduce the amount of tumor necrosis factor α released from LPS activated microglial cells.

What CBD oil is good for

If you follow cannabis news, you’re bound to have learned about a slew of conditions CBD oil is good for, including chronic pain and anxiety. But there are other uses that you may not have heard of yet.

Quitting smoking is one of the most difficult tasks for someone with a habit. Now anecdotal evidence shows that CBD can help not only with the depression and anxiety associated with quitting, but if you use a CBD pen in lieu of a cigarette or nicotine vape pen, the hand to mouth motion helps with that part of the addiction. Many people trying not to smoke find that they don’t know what to do with their hands during times when they crave a cigarette or e-cig, so a CBD vape pen is a perfect solution on many levels.

Did you know that CBD may have an effect on high blood pressure? Though you are always advised to talk to your doctor about treatments and to not stop any other treatment plans, adding CBD oil to your list of supplements couldn’t hurt. It is an innocuous component of the cannabis plant and has no psychoactive properties whatsoever when under the 0.3 percent THC mark. The fact that CBD also combats anxiety means that you shouldn’t be nervous to add it to your daily regime.

CBD is often used for anxious pets

The increased demand for wellness and self-care products during the coronavirus pandemic has made more people curious about trying CBD, even though it has yet to be approved by the Food and Drug Administration.

Separate from the actual virus, quarantine itself brings its own share of ills, such as anxiety, depression, sleeping problems, muscle pain from inactivity and, of course, crippling boredom. Although CBD is on its way to be clinically proven to reduce anxiety, reducing anxiety is a key selling point for CBD, so it makes sense that in a time of public uncertainty more people would be open to experimenting with it.

As many of us are home with our beloved pets, Animals also have an endocannabinoid system, CBD is often used for anxious pets. Many CBD product lines now include items specifically for animals; there are also CBD brands dedicated entirely to them, including Natural Pet Oils , which has separate product lines for dogs, cats and an array of pets.

Potential Treatment For Heroin

CBD has been evaluated as a potential treatment for heroin craving by assessing its effects in heroin abusers. A small double-blind design was conducted in opioid-dependent individuals (no dependence on any other drug than heroin according to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 4th Edition) who, based on urine toxicology screening and the Clinical Opioid Withdrawal Scale, had been abstinent for at least 7 days.

As the preclinical animal study had evaluated CBD effects following the administration of a single dose of CBD for 3 consecutive days, the human study design for the pilot experiment also had a similar design. As such, individuals were randomized to 3 consecutive days of CBD or placebo treatment before participating in laboratory sessions.

The craving paradigm consisted of cue-induced craving test sessions where opioid-related and neutral video cues were presented at 1 h after a single CBD/placebo administration, 24 h after a single CBD/placebo administration, and 7 days following the final CBD/placebo administration.

The results showed that a single administration of CBD, in com-parison to placebo, attenuated subjective cue-induced craving measured after 1 h using the VAS craving scale.

The single administration of CBD even maintained a decrease of general craving 24 h later, assessed using a heroin-craving questionnaire. Furthermore, the effect of CBD in reducing craving persisted even 7 days after the last treatment. Interestingly, the effects of CBD were also evident on anxiety in which there was an effective reduction in VAS anxiety measures.

These preliminary pilot human study findings support the preclinical evidence and clinical studies that have evaluated anxiety, suggesting a potential therapeutic efficacy of CBD to reduce negative states in opioid-dependent individuals, which may, in turn, predict reduced craving and hence reduce the likelihood of relapse behavior.

CBD Helps!

CBD continues to be a constant in helping people through this uncertain time. This is precisely why CBD stores should be considered essential: If hemp and CBD products can be sold in other businesses classified as critical, the government must recognize on some level that access to CBD is essential. Still others pointed to the inconsistencies between how marijuana and alcohol have been treated under quarantine in comparison to CBD. If liquor and marijuana are considered essential, why isn’t CBD?

Consumers rely on CBD for everyday wellness and there are dozens of stories from CBD consumers whose health and well-being deteriorate markedly when they do not have access to their daily CBD regimen.

True Natural Oils is Striving to Move Forward in Development

True Natural Oils is Striving to Move Forward in Development

The well-known saying for those hawking baseball scorecards might be just as appropriate in the fledgling CBD category. With more and more players entering the marketplace and many predicting that the category is finally ready to explode in sales, retailers may need a scorecard to know who the players are in the marketplace.

According to Boulder, Colo.-based BDS Analytics and Market Research, the collective market for CBD sales, which includes cosmetics, health products, food and beverage, pet products, skin care, and pharmaceuticals, is expected to exceed $20 billion in the United States by 2024.

We at True Natural Oils still are waiting for the Food and Drug Administration & develop regulations related to CBD in food and dietary supplements. The FDA maintains that there is a lack of scientific information supporting the use of CBD in food, and also noted that the agency is continuing to explore pathways for various types of CBD products to be marketed.

Daily Regimens

Increasingly, patients are asking about or have already begun to add CBD to their daily regimens. What evidence is there for the efficacy of CBD?

Small trials in humans have examined the use of high-dose CBD (typically 300 to 1,000 mg per day, taken orally) in social anxiety in a simulated public speaking model (Bergamaschi et al., 2011; Zuardi et al., 2017).

Eating disorders are another area of interest, as the endocannabinoid system is a key regulator of appetite, but have not been examined in clinical trials. Finally, the antidepressant potential of CBD (possibly due to 5HT1A agonism, similar to some antidepressant medications) has been explored in more clinical studies with impressive results in relieving anxiety.
